I started snowboarding 15 years ago at Pebble Creek. It's a small mom-n-pop hill just outside of Pocasmello. It can't be beat when the snow is right. This is the part of Idaho (and thereabouts) that I love. I love the mountains...Targhee, Baldy, Jackson, Snowbird, Sundance, Brighton. I wasn't allowed at Alta because of the board, but I hear it's even better there. Then we moved to Seattle where the snow isn't quite as good but the mountains are even more spectacular. We spent as much time as possible in them, winter or summer.
I never felt like I left it behind, though. The mountains aren't quite as epic here and the snow's a bit on the less powdery side (try straight up ice), but I'm not a super epic outdoorsman anyway. And then there were the babies. Turns out, pregnancy and nursing can take a toll on the number of days up on the hill. But that, too, is behind me.
So we gathered some friends, geared up my little angel, and headed up to Rangley. Eva and I walked into the rental shop (called Powder Dreams, no joke) and I asked her to introduce herself to the workers while I filled out the paperwork. She took a few steps through the door (just out of my eyesight) and I heard her say, "My name is Eva Renae Hatzenbuehler. I'm learning to ski." By the time I caught up, the bearded ski man was walking her around the shop inspecting helmets. They were looking for the perfect one which, of course, they found.
The snow was ok. The Idaho girl in me could never say more than that even on a powder day in Maine. But the view? There's nothing like it.
